Switching to Raw Feeding Guide for Dogs & Cats

Switching to Raw Feeding Guide for Dogs & Cats

Switching to Raw Feeding Guide for Dogs & Cats is easier than most people think. The biggest challenge is usually freezer space, so before you start, make sure you have enough room to store raw food. You’ll also need a place to defrost meals safely.

Some people worry about food poisoning or contamination when switching to raw. If you follow good hygiene just like you would when preparing food for your family—there’s no need to worry. Wash your hands, clean surfaces, and wash bowls after every meal. If the food smells off, don’t use it. Also, if it’s been defrosted for more than a couple of days, throw it away.

I’ve been pregnant and had a baby while feeding raw to my pets, so I can confirm that raw feeding is safe when done correctly.

Two Methods to Switching to Raw Feeding Guide for Dogs & Cats

1. Straight Switch (Fastest & Easiest)

This is the simplest method and works best for pets with strong stomachs.

Feed your pet their last kibble meal in the evening

Offer raw food for the first meal the next morning

Some pets may refuse it at first, but keep offering it — most will eventually try it. Some pets will happily accept raw food immediately, making the switch super easy.

2. Gradual Change (Best for Sensitive Stomachs)

This method is ideal for pets who are fussy or have sensitive digestion.

Transition time: 7–10 days

Start with:

25% raw + 75% kibble

Then increase the raw portion every 2 days until your pet is fully switched.

There are myths about mixing raw with kibble, like acidity differences or digestion speed. These have been proven untrue, both foods are digested in the same way.

If your pet has a sensitive stomach, you can use prebiotics and probiotics to help during the transition. I always keep them in the cupboard in case any of my pets get an upset tummy.

Switching to Raw Feeding Guide for Dogs & Cats, My Experience Switching My Pets

When I tried gradual switching with Goose, she had an upset stomach. I then switched to the straight switch method and added probiotics, which helped immediately. This was probably because she wasn’t doing well on kibble anyway.

The toughest switch was our cat Odin, who refused raw food for a few days. I offered different flavours, but he still refused. Eventually, he tried it and loved it! Now I just learn which flavours he prefers. I use Purrform for him because it is complete and ensures he gets enough taurine, which is essential for cats.

Optional Support: Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) can help support digestion during the switch. Always dilute it 50/50 with water.

Dosage

Dogs up to 6kg: 1 teaspoon

Dogs 6–15kg: 2 teaspoons

Dogs 15–35kg: 1 tablespoon

Cats: 1/4 teaspoon

Use raw organic ACV, as it contains beneficial enzymes, bacteria, and yeast. Pasteurised or filtered ACV may not provide the same benefits. Always shake before use.
